Baptism

The baptism that was practiced by John the Baptist was a baptism that belonged to a particular time, to the Old Covenant, which by the way, was approaching to its end. This baptism was known as baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

According to the New Covenant, there are two types of baptism: the baptism in water, and the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

The baptism in water is by immersion, and is performed in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, according to the instructions the Messiah imparted his disciples. Mathew 28/19: "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit..."

It is a unique moment in the life of the believer, has a profound meaning, that the person has accepted his new life in Jesus and has left behind the old men, with its old ways and life, in other words it has a symbolism, that the person that enters the waters is one, and dies, the one that gets out of the water, is a new one, renewed by Jesus.

Regarding the other baptism, the one in the Holy Spirit, remember that John the Baptist said regarding Jesus that: Mathew 3/11: "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit, and [with] fire"

And Jesus after his resurrection, said unto their disciples: Acts 1/4-5 "And, being assembled together with [them,] commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, [saith he,] ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days hence."

And the first believers were baptized with the Holy Spirit in the day of Pentecost.
